What is a doula?
As a full spectrum doula, I provide emotional, physical and informational support to folks throughout their lives whether they are pregnant or trying to conceive. I am trained to support individuals and families throughout all pregnancy outcomes including abortion, adoption, birth, infant loss and miscarriage.
Why choose a doula for your birth?
“Continuous support from a doula during labor provides physical and emotional benefits for mothers [parents] and health bonuses for their babies. With less medical interventions, fewer complications, and shorter hospital stays, there may be financial savings too.” - Harvard Health Letter
Though the word "doula" is new to some, the role of a doula is a traditional profession all around the world. The doula's main goals are healthy you and baby. That a doula provides unwavering support prenatal and postnatal is a testament to that philosophy. Having a doula provides many benefits, including the following:
Labouring people/ mothers who had continuous support during birth:
- 31% decrease in the use of Pitocin*
- 28% decrease in the risk of C-section*
- 12% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth*
- 34% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience*
- 9% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief
- 14% decrease in the risk of newborns being admitted to a special care nursery
Research shows that those with continuous support throughout labour fared more or less the same except for the first four outcomes. In these four areas those with doulas had more positive outcomes.
